Breastfeeding is the natural and healthy way to nourish your baby, yet it’s not always easy. New mothers need practical information about getting off to a good start and solving breastfeeding challenges. Health professionals need this information too, because it is rarely taught in medical school. Dr. Jack Newman’s Guide to Breastfeeding covers the most common problems and questions that mothers encounter

- How do I help my baby to get a good latch?
- How can I know if my baby is getting enough milk?
- How can I help him get more?
- Can I avoid sore nipples?
- Will my medication affect my baby
- How do I fit breastfeeding into my life when I’m so busy?

The answers are here. Dr. Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman are two of the foremost lactation experts in Canada and have helped tens of thousands of new mothers find solutions that work. In this comprehensive guide, they share the most current information about breastfeeding and provide new, effective strategies and solutions to make breastfeeding work for you.

I bought this book at the recommendation of the lactation consultant I saw in the hospital after delivering. I was struggling with breastfeeding and turned to this book for help and answers. The best thing I did to help breastfeed was hire a certified consultant to come to our home. It was far too hard to try and fix my baby’s latch issue by reading a book. I also felt like a lot of what I read was to instill fear in new moms (it’s a myth that you need formula to supplement in first few days, no formula, no artificial nipples like bottles or pacifiers). Upon conferring with our pediatrician, my OB, and another lactation consultant, I broke all of these rules. We had to use formula because my milk took almost a week to come in and my baby was starving. We also turned to a pacifier because my nipples were raw and we learned some babies just like sucking for comfort, not always for hunger, which is a big no-no in this book. Don’t get me wrong, I am pro-breastfeeding and intend to go for a full year, but at best this book should be a complimentary resource for common issues in feeding. Unless you have the same line of thinking as Dr. Newman (who, please note, has clearly never breastfed), then talk to other experts that are more moderate and can give tips that work for you and baby. My goals are to feed my baby but also survive/be mentally healthy and I don’t believe this book promotes both of those.

I found this to be just ok. It really didn't help me with the day to day questions I had on breastfeeding. But it was helpful to have on hand for relatives who may not support your breastfeeding endeavor. There are a lot of good reference points to direct those people to.
A very comprehensive guide. I purchased the edition & was pleased to see that illustrations were included, sometimes this format doesn't allow for that. I am looking forward to using this as a resource. Author took the time to address a lot of potential problems that may arise & presents multiple, detailed solutions for each. I have a feeling that this book will be my go-to tool while establishing breastfeeding.
This book, along with The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (La Leche League International Book) are my top pics for breast feeding books. I only had LLL's book w/ my first son, and did find it more descriptive than Jacks for how to put Baby to the breast, I thought I had it down pat before my baby arrived. But..... then somehow I still had mega latch issues, and the nurses were telling me I was doing everything right. But, as Jack points out, it's easy/common to be told you're doing everything right when that may not be the case- if you are in pain, you need help to correct the situation, and fast! Thankfully I looked up a local La Leche League leader who spent a couple hours with me in her home showing me how to make his latch more comfortable in just about every position you can think of, and things shaped up after that just fine. So if you need in-person help, I highly recommend looking up a local La Leche League leader!

As far as BF reading material goes, I highly recommend this book. I also found that my hospital did several things I should have objected to with my first son, so hopefully things will go a lot smoother this time around now that I know what to object to.

Be sure to check out Jack's website though!!!!!!! won't let me link to it, but if you google his name you'll find it. He has videos showing correct and incorrect latches, as well as demonstrating when babies are just sucking vs. when they are actually drinking. I found his videos to be a great help, especially when compared to a written description- it's just easier to see what he's talking about by actually seeing a video.
Excellent. I am a breastfeeding counselor for that last 21 years and I have found the information in the book realistic and usable. The range of topics covered leaves nothing to chance. From free access to the breast right after birth and the development of a proper latch, to the pros of breastfeeding and the problems of supplement feeding, the importance of skin to skin contact for bonding and comfort, to exclusive breastfeeding and the dangers of mixed feeding...it is all there. a definite book for new mothers and professionals alike. It is informative, easy to read and definitely a "go to" resource.
I breastfed my first son until he was two and am currently exclusively breastfeeding my 9 month old son. I am a believer in breastfeeding.

I purchased this book as a part of a required reading list. I am now back here looking how to return it. While I agree with a majority of the statements made in this book, there is not one actual citation made to a study to back up these claims. There is scare tactic after scare tactic coupled with facts to attempt to prove points. There are helpful sections of this book regarding specific breastfeeding issues and that is why I gave it any stars at all.

It's books like this, that try to support women breastfeeding, but end up scaring them away, because the pressure they apply makes you feel as though you have failed before you even begin. If you want to succeed in breastfeeding or to help support someone you love that is breastfeeding, please find a better written and more encouraging book (with actual references!)
